We had a wonderful time in Norway. Perhaps the most memorable day started in the village of Flam, pronounced ‘Flom’, with a rail trip up the valley, past a spectacular waterfall, and on to Voss by another train.

I got to Hassness quite late, having stopped en route to meet some friends in Manchester. To my surprise, I had the M6 to myself over Shap. As soon as I got to the Buttermere valley, I discovered where everyone was – Hassness.

I received two surprises on the very first day. Having missed the hotel on my way in to Matlock Bath I went on into the centre and discovered it is not the quiet spa town that I had anticipated!

What a fantastic place with so much to do and see; I am sure we only skimmed the surface. Our guide, Gerry was brilliant and had put together some varied walking and sightseeing tours on local and private buses and taking the ferry to Rousay and Hoy.

A first trip to Crete… and what a magical place. Chania is the perfect Mediterranean port. Where else would you walk around the harbour or an old town and actually think that EVERY restaurant deserved a visit; so friendly, and the ones we ate in served some of the best holiday food ever.

Whale-watching! It wasn’t on the schedule but couldn’t be missed. Cliff negotiated a good deal – taxi there, three hours whale-watching and a taxi back – E37.50!
