Weekend Adventure Breaks

Short Adventure Breaks & Hiking Weekends

Want to get away for an unforgettable journey on foot but don’t have lots of time? Our selection of epic weekend adventure breaks are perfect for time-strapped explorers, people looking for a weekend challenge or those wanting to experience a micro-adventure. Over the course of a 3-night break, these active weekend breaks pack in cracking walks in exceptional locations across the UK and Europe. In small groups led by an experienced guide you’ll chalk off essential climbs and uncover hidden corners, ensuring you head home on Monday with stories to tell and maximum bragging rights from your weekend away.

You could bag 13 Wainwrights and experience some of the Lake District’s finest views, or summit five of the Welsh 3000s on a hiking weekend in the UK. From a small Sicilian town, you might undertake a unique excursion on the slopes of Mt Etna. Go hiking in the Julian Alps for an alpine weekend getaway in Slovenia's mountains or tread the old mule paths and trails from one pueblo blanco to another, deep into the wild and remote valleys of Spain’s Alpujarras mountains. On these short adventure breaks we’ll handle the route finding, so you can just lace up your boots and step into adventure.

Weekend Adventure Breaks in the UK

From our country house base in the Lake District, enjoy a series of Wainwright walks on one of our toughest weekend breaks, to traverse High Stile Ridge and hike the Grasmoor Peaks. On a UK hiking weekend in the Peak District, climb Kinder Scout and explore the less-visited Dark Peak region. Elsewhere, follow a section of the South West Coast Path while walking in Devon. And in Wales, the best Snowdonia National Park walks hike the high ridges and peaks of the Carneddau range and tackle the North Glyder Ridge.

Weekend Adventure Breaks in Spain

On an active weekend break enjoy some of the best Picos de Europa hikes, ascending into the mountains on the Fuente De cable car to hike among the rugged spires and famous rock towers. On an unforgettable walking holiday in Andalucía, our carefully chosen Alpujarras hiking routes get you to the heart of this hidden gem. Challenging Sierra Nevada hikes through remote barrancos and along a section of the GR7 then unlock another corner of this spectacular region.

Weekend Adventure Breaks in Italy & Slovenia

Enjoy unforgettable Mount Etna hikes and climb the Monte Pizzo Ridge for panoramic views over Sicily or, on a series of Cinque Terre hikes see all five famed villages from the legendary route as you traverse the Ligurian coast. Escape the crowds in the Julian Alps and, on Slovenian mountain hiking trails, experience the thrill of exploring Triglav National Park to summit peaks including Vogel and Rodica, and hike the Komarca Trail.

Weekend Adventure Breaks in Austria & Germany

Get to the heart of the Alps while hiking in Austria and explore Maria Alm and Bad Hofgastein, stopping at rustic mountain huts tackling ridge walks and immersing yourself in the scenery and far-reaching views. Alternatively, in Germany, complete the dramatic ridge walk between Bad Kohlgrub and Ettal when hiking in Bavaria, and toast your success in a traditional beer garden.

Frequently asked questions about Weekend Adventure Breaks

  • Why go on a weekend adventure break?

Our adventure weekend trips let you explore places you couldn’t easily yourself in just a few days. Let our experienced, enthusiastic leaders unlock corners and experiences in extraordinary places to give you a thrilling experience. These short adventure breaks are ideal for time-pressed explorers looking for a walking weekend or hiking weekend with maximum bragging rights.

  • Where to hike this weekend?

Try a UK hiking weekend and join Wainwright walks in the Lake District and summit some cracking fells or take on exciting Snowdonia National Park walks to summit some of the renowned Welsh 3,000s. Elsewhere, in Europe, our active weekend breaks will let you immerse yourself in Italy on Cinque Terre hikes or Mount Etna walks, go hiking in Austria or tackle Slovenian mountain hiking trails.

  • What is the difference between walking holidays and hiking holidays?

All of our holidays let you get to know a place while enjoying unforgettable adventures on foot. Our typical walking holidays are graded so you can pick the right level of activity and challenge for you. Hiking holidays tend to be more active, and represent the higher walking grades we offer, with the routes considered challenging. Essentially, hiking holidays require more stamina and effort but offer greater reward amidst spectacular scenery, with an incredible sense of achievement and satisfaction.

  • How many people are there per group?

Join a small, like-minded group of on average 12 people on your weekend adventure break. The group is typically made up of solo travellers, couples, and friends, which ensures that there’s an exciting group dynamic and camaraderie.

  • Can you arrange flights & transfers?

Our weekend adventure breaks are advertised as tour only. We can of course book your hiking holiday with flights and transfers. In this instance, we’ll take care of every detail; from booking your flights to arranging seamless connections, we’ll ensure the journey is hassle-free. You’ll also benefit from the financial protection provided by our ABTA and ATOL licenses, so your money is completely safe.

  • What happens at meal times?

On our weekend adventure breaks we’ve made sure there’s lots of flexibility for you to pick and choose different dining experiences. Breakfast during the holiday will be taken at your hotel. Lunches are not included in the price but your walk leader will be able to advise the best place to purchase a picnic lunch. Some of the breaks are half board, when you will eat in the hotel, but on those where dinner is not included, you can choose to dine in the hotel, or to explore the local restaurants, individually or with members of the group.

  • What to pack for a weekend adventure break

When you’re considering what to take on your weekend break, make sure you’re prepared for strenuous outdoor activities. Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good, moulded sole and a deep tread, and which provide ankle support, are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks. You should also consider a waterproof jacket, walking t-shirts and a fleece as conditions can be changeable. Warm hats and gloves or a sun hat might be appropriate at different times of year. And you should bring a comfortable day pack to carry your clothing, a water bottle, packed lunch and basic first aid kit.
