Measuring a compact 45 square miles, Jersey is the largest Channel Island and offers a wide variety of terrain suitable for both strollers and energetic cliff-top hikers. Beautiful rural and coastal scenery, megalithic monuments and unspoilt towns and villages can be accessed from the 45 miles of country roads designated as ‘Green Lanes’, which have a speed limit of 15 mph, with priority given to walkers, cyclists and horse riders. There is a wealth of wildlife to enjoy, and the island is particularly rich in birdlife and wild flowers.
On Guernsey, the equivalent of the Green Lanes is the ‘Ruettes Tranquilles’ which meander through the Bailiwick’s varied and beautiful rural landscapes. With spectacular cliff paths, sweeping bays, secluded coves and picturesque harbours, Guernsey offers the most rewarding coastal walks. Vazon Bay, on the west coast, recently won the coveted title of ‘Britain’s Cleanest Beach’. The characterful and quaint island of Sark is just a short ferry ride away. And with the Normandy coast only eight miles distant, there’s a tangible French cultural influence to the island.
