What does this mean?
What does this mean?
This is a Grade 5 moderate holiday which includes full day walks. Ascents will be between 250 – 600 meters with walking times of approximately 5 – 7 hours per day. Three of the walks are 11 – 15 miles but the moderate ascents and descents do not warrant a higher energetic grade for the holiday. Our programme covers approximately 67 miles in 6 days and will be split into manageable daily sections. The maximum altitude reached on this tour is 345m (Housesteads Fort area).
Thoughtfully designed, meticulously planned, carefully graded, and expertly guided walking tours and hiking holidays along well-loved and off-the-beaten-track footpaths.
Overview
Emperor Hadrian, after whom this iconic landmark is named, had the wall built in the 2nd century to mark the northern border of the Roman Empire. Sections of Hadrian’s wall walk pass through stunning scenery, making this a journey to be enjoyed on many levels, scenic, historic, cultural; there is something for everyone.
The wall walk itself is a very pleasant experience as it doesn’t feature any lengthy ascents and descents, crossing the rolling countryside. Traversing from east to west, our path covers around 66 miles of the 84-mile route in six days, starting just west of Heddon-on-the-Wall and finishing at Bowness-on-Solway.
The trip is filled with archaeological insights which bring to life what it must have been like for a Roman soldier stationed on the wall (many of whom were Syrian, where the climate is somewhat different!)
Hadrian's Wall is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its natural splendour and historical importance. We will walk to various well-preserved archaeological treasures along the route. You will be taken to visit the Roman forts at Chesters, Housesteads and Birdoswald.
You will also travel to the historic city of Carlisle with a chance to visit the impressive castle. All the above sites are owned and operated by English Heritage and entrance is free to English Heritage members. Housesteads is also free to National Trust members, so don’t forget your membership cards if you have them. Entrance to the Carvoran Roman Army Museum is included in the holiday price.
Your holiday is based in two hotels in different centres and we use hired transport, as appropriate, to get to the best of the walking through this ancient border landscape.

Walk the Northern Section of the Offa's Dyke Path. This covers the route's first 50 miles southwards from Prestatyn to Chirk Castle.
Some of the most varied and impressive scenery on a long-distance path in England, walking from Helmsley to Filey in North Yorkshire.
At 53 miles, this long distance circular footpath was devised in the 1980s and has quickly become a favourite amongst continuous trail walkers.
Walk highlights of The Geopark Way long distance path from Alfrick to Eastnor.

Ascent/Descent
From just west of Whittle Dean Reservoir to Chesters Fort
The first section walk of the week, and the first sighting of the wall can be seen today, and if time allows, your first look at a Hadrian’s Wall Turret (the excellently preserved Brunton Turret), and finish the day with a visit to Chesters Roman Fort. Known to the Romans as Cilurnum, it is now one of the major sites along the wall, famous for its cavalry barracks, and well-preserved military bathhouse, located beside the River North Tyne.

Ascent/Descent
Walwick to Housesteads Fort
Travel by road back to Chesters Fort, and onwards to the village of Walwick for the start of the walk. Soon you pass our first stretch of wall at Blackcarts, complete with Turrets. Investigate the mysteries at Limestone Corner, the most northerly part of The Wall (and so the Roman Empire). Soon, you will learn something about one of the most significant religions practised by Roman Soldiers on a visit to the Temple of Mithras at Carrawburgh Fort.
After entering Northumberland National Park, we head up to Sewingshields Crags. This is the start of the most spectacular section of The Wall, and also gives the first glimpse of a Milecastle. The finish today is at Housesteads Fort and museum, perhaps the best known site on the wall; famous for its military latrine, and infamous for the Murder House. It's stunning location, perched atop the lofty crags of the Whin Sill, makes for the perfect end to the day.

Ascent/Descent
Housesteads Fort to Carvoran Army Museum
Starting from Housesteads Fort, you'll follow the most spectacular stretch of the wall on the trail to Carvoran. There are sections of short-but-steep rocky climbs and descents on this part of the trail, but the scenic rewards are many, and the views truly breathtaking. But this is also the best-preserved stretch of the wall, where Milecastles, Turrets, and other structures abound, and the story of the wall really comes to life.
Finishing the day at Carvoran Roman Army Museum is ideal, not only because this is one of the best museums in the North of England, but also because its 3D film ’The Eagle’s Eye’ gives us a peek at how the wall we’ve just walked may have looked when first built.

Ascent/Descent
We depart the Beaumont Hotel after breakfast and your luggage will stay with you on the private coach and then transfer with you to the Crown & Mitre in the centre of Carlisle.
Carvoran Army Museum to Walton
Travel by road to Carvoran Army Museum. Although we leave the Whin Sill behind, there is still much of the wall to see today, as we pass from Northumberland to Cumbia, and visit one of the most significant Milecastles of the whole wall, Poltross Burn. You then cross the River Irthing, where you can examine the footings of the bridge that carried Hadrian’s Wall across the river, and climb to Birdoswald Roman Fort (overlooking the Irthing Gap) for a short visit, before continuing to Walton along the route of the Turf Wall. The coach will then transfer to Carlisle and the group will check in at the Crown & Mitre Hotel.
Dinner each evening is in the hotel’s restaurant.

Travel by road to Walton and then follow the westerly course of the wall. At Crosby-on-Eden, the National Trail leaves in favour of the River Eden, which it follows all the way to Carlisle. We should arrive in good time for you to explore some of what this historic city has to offer: The impressive sandstone cathedral, English Heritage’s Carlisle Castle, or the highly recommended Tullie House Museum.

This is a fairly long day, although it can be cut short (you may wish to catch a service bus to the lunch stop, or cut out the first 3 miles and drive your car to Grinsdale where you can leave your car. At the end of the walk you can be transported back to your car).

Water To Go
Opting for filtered water from a reusable bottle with its built-in water filter, like the Water-to-go bottle available at www.watertogo.eu, is a sustainable alternative to single-use sealed water bottles. Simply refill it from any water source and contribute to saving the environment from disposable plastic bottles.
Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.
As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWH17 during your order.
Note: If you're booked on a long-haul holiday, you'll receive a complimentary Water to Go bottle, sent to your home address 2 or 3 weeks before your holiday. Thank you for being a part of our sustainable journey!
