2025 walking holidays in Sri Lanka

Residing peacefully in the warm Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka offers impossible beauty; flourishing tea plantations, cloud-veiled tropical hilltops, and lavish cityscapes. Encounter exquisite biodiversity amid the emerald canopy of the Sinharaja Rainforest, explore ancient palaces and gardens, feel the sand between your toes on one of Sri Lanka’s endless paradise beaches. On a walking holiday in Sri Lanka, you’ll traverse a sacred kingdom home to an incredible eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. A rich history of dynastic rule has shaped the landscape with immaculately preserved tombs, gardens, and statues.

Tropical rainforest, white-sand beaches, rolling mountain peaks, and spectacular grasslands provide some of the richest habitats in the world. Nature lovers will delight in our specialised birds and wildlife tour package; expert naturalists will help you to spot Asian elephants, leopards, whales, and sloth bears as well as a myriad of endemic exotic birds.

Why visit Sri Lanka?

Local guides will reveal the secret histories of Sri Lanka as we explore some of Sri Lanka’s remarkable UNESCO heritage sites; Kandy, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Anuradhapura, and the Cave Temples at Dambulla.

Kandy, the last capital of the Sri Lankan kings, is the nation’s own Shangri-La. Outlandish architecture, grand temples, and ornate gardens provide sanctuary once reserved only for royalty. Sri Lanka’s legends, traditions and folklore are kept alive here.

Marvel as dancers decorate the streets with flashes of red and gold as they perform a magnificent pageantry of culture. Or, pay homage at The Temple of the Tooth, a vast complex of intricate temples built five centuries ago which houses the nation’s most sacred relic - a tooth belonging to Buddha himself.

From the earliest days of the Silk Road, Sri Lanka has been a key location for commerce in luxury goods. Intriguing and alluring spices colour buzzing Bazaars as market vendors peddle their wares; exotic fruits, elaborate silks, and aromatic perfumes. We’ll visit a tea plantation to learn more as we dry, cut, roll, ferment, and sift our tea - earning a delicious taste of the finished brew.

A trek up Horton Plains grasslands is a spectacular climb; we’ll be rewarded with breathtaking waterfalls and dramatic cloud framed views of ‘World’s End’ - a 1000m cliff face. Look out for Junglefowl, Kashmir Flycatchers, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch and Black-winged Kites darting within the tall grass.

Leisurely

Grade 3

We still class this level as leisurely; walks are generally a little longer than level 2, with undulations but over a longer distance. Where sightseeing distances are longer, we take a full day with opportunities to stop, rest and refuel. Generally, itineraries involve easy countryside walking with plenty of breaks.
