What does this mean?
This is a grade 4 sightseeing walking holiday including half and full days of walking at a moderate pace. This is primarily a sightseeing holiday where we will discover the cities and places of interest mainly on foot and with a local guide. The days where we will be mainly hiking, we will be walking between 1.5 – 5 miles. Our half day walks will be up to 3 hours of walking whereas our full days will be up to 5 hours of walking. We will be walking on generally good paths used by local shepherds. We will be taking paths through shrubbery areas and pine forests. We may also encounter small rivers to pass. The ascents and descents can be between 150-200m.

Overview
On your Silk Road holiday, follow in the footsteps of history’s greats, Marco Polo and Tamerlane, through ancient trade routes linking east and west. Admire majestic skylines of brightly coloured minarets and sand-coloured towers adorned with intricate Islamic mosaics.
Pass through Kazakhstan’s national parks for spectacular views of its beautiful wilderness before discovering mediaeval Islamic culture in Uzbekistan.
It all begins in Kazakhstan; little known by westerners, but a land of wild and dramatic landscapes. The ancient capital (Astana became the capital in 1997) Almaty, is as spectacularly situated city as any. It nestles below the Altau mountains. Once you have explored the city you head off to the mountains.
You’ll take a small group tour exploring natural wonders such as Charyn Canyon as well as enjoying the highlights of Almaty.
You follow along the ancient Silk Road trading route to Uzbekistan's capital city of Tashkent, blessed with some of the finest buildings in the Islamic world. In Beldersay, you’ll hike winding trails past snow-capped mountains with a knowledgeable local guide. Then, in Khiva, discover architectural gems and towering minarets of gilded mosques before touring a traditional silk carpet workshop.
Travelling south, you’ll experience Bukhara where we’ll visit the spectacular sights of the city on a guided tour. Then on to Samarkand, a wonderful place and home to the impressive Registan Square.
You’ll enjoy learning the local culture and customs by meeting local artists visiting a ceramic workshop, craft centres, and attending a mini concert at Sherdor Madrassah. Returning to Tashkent you’ll enjoy some more exploration and free time before the transfer to the airport for the flight home.

On arrival you transfer to the hotel in Almaty where rooms will be ready. Freshen up before an early afternoon tour of the city. Almaty is the former administrative capital of Kazakhstan and remains the commercial, financial, scientific and educational capital. It is surrounded by a necklace of emerald-blue mountains with snow-covered tops. During the afternoon sightseeing tour, visits include the historical center, the park of 28 guardsmen of Panfilov, the Memorial of Glory, Saint-Voznesensky cathedral and Museum of Musical Instruments.

Today you head towards Turgen Gorge. On the way you will visit the Issyk burial mounds where the most important archaeological treasure of Kazakhstan was excavated - the tomb of the Golden Warrior, who became a national symbol of Kazakhstan. You will continue to Turgen Gorge where you hike to Bear’s Waterfall (2.5 hrs). We also visit a small zoo for a very educational and entertaining show featuring falconry and other birds of prey.

You will spend much of the day at Charyn Canyon; an amazing creation of nature. Numerous ravines and gullies were carved through centuries of wind and rain erosion. All along the valley you are surrounded by towers of eroded sedimentary rock of fantastical forms. perhaps the most photographed is one that resembles a majestic castle. You will have lunch in a local cafe before continuing to explore the canyon. You will return to Almaty for dinner in a local restaurant.

Today you take three cable cars up into the mountains to the south of Almaty. From Medeo we travel up to Shymbulak and further to the top of Talgar Pass (3163 m) to marvel in the picturesque views over the mountains. Hopefully the weather will allow fantastic views. From the top of the cable car the plan is to hike to Shymbulak Peak (3355 m). Plans today are dependent on weather and also the unpredictable maintenance schedules of Shymbulak cable car. If we cannot make it into the mountains, we will make alternate plans.
Also please note that we are high up here and it will be cold. We will possibly we walking in snow. Please bring hat, gloves and warm clothing.

Early morning you will travel to Almaty Airport for the flight to Tashkent. On arrival you transfer to the hotel, where you can leave luggage and continue for a city tour of Tashkent. Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, is a fascinating place. During the tour of the city you will discover the Old City, including the Khastimom complex, Tillya Sheikh mosque, Kaffal Shashiy Mausoleum, Kukaldosh Madrassah, Chorsu bazaar and the Applied Arts Museum. You will also visit ceramist Akbar Rahimov’s workshop and have a tea break with oriental sweets. You will continue the exploration of Tashkent with dinner in a local restaurant.

Today take a cable car trip at Amirsoy Resort to the top station. The routes fromhere offer panoramic views of Big Chimgan (3309 m), Kumbel (2307 m), Jar (2937 m) Peaks and the adjacent ridges of the Ugam-Chatkal State Nature Park, the Nurekatasay River valley and the surrounding mountains. Walk a 1.5 hrs hike along Kumble Mountain Ridge to local weather station. At different times of the year, mountain landscapes will give unique impressions: snowfields that have not melted since winter and blooming alpine meadows at the beginning of summer and hopefully a blaze of autumn colours in September and October. After the walk you will return to Tashkent airport to fly to Urgench; from here transfer by road (40 minutes) to Khiva.
Dinner is not included today but many dining options are available. Your tour leader and local guide can advise.

This morning we start our sightseeing programme in Khiva. The city has preserved its architectural heritage well from the days of the Silk Road, and now referred to as a ‘museum city’. Sightseeing will include such sights as Madrassah Allakuli Khan, Madrassah Muhammad Amin Khan, Kunya Ark, Kelte Minar, Pakhlavan Mahmud Mausoleum and Tash Hovli Palace. Later you will visit a silk carpet workshop, which is under UNESCO sponsorship. You will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and dinner at the hotel.

Today you drive from Khiva to Bukhara, crossing the Kizilkum Desert (480km, 7-8 hours). We will take regular stops to stretch our legs and you will be provided with lunch en route. You will stop on the Amu Darya river bank for the perfect photo stop opportunity. Amu Darya is perhaps better known as the Oxus River to English speakers. On arrival, you can enjoy some refreshments in the Spices Tea House.

A full day to discover Bukhara, a magnificent city, and also a major stop on the Silk Road and steeped in medieval Islamic architecture, theology and culture. It still contains Uzbekistan’s finest and best-preserved mosques, madrassas, and bazaars. You will visit sites such as Chor Minor, Ark fortress, Bolo Hauz Mosque, the ancient Silk Market, Magokki Attori mosque and Labi Hauz complex. You'll also visit Sitorai Mokhi-Khosa summer residence. This evening you will dine at a local restaurant.

After breakfast we visit Sitorai Mokhi Hosa-summer residence. This beautifully decorated summer palace was constructed between 1912-1918 by order of the last Emir of Bukhara Mir Sayyd Muhammad Alim Khan. You then make the journey to Samarkand. En route you stop at Gijduvan to visit a ceramist’s workshop, the Abdul Khaliq al-Ghujdawani Complex and Ulugbek Madrasah. You also visit the ruins of Rabbat Malik Caravansary. On arriving in Samarkand, there is time to relax. Dinner will be taken at the hotel.

Today you will visit Gur Emir Mausoleum, an Islamic monument tomb erected in the 1400s and one of the most interesting sights of Samarkand. You will also visit Registan Square, a real archaeological gem in the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand. A mini concert and mini presentation about national music instruments at Sherdor Medrassah will inspire us before taking a visit to the Happy Bird Craft Centre to meet with local artists. The journey will finish with a visit to the 15th Century beautifully decorated Bibi-Khanym Mosque. Dinner will be taken at a local restaurant.

You continue exploring Samarkand including Ulugbek Observatory, Afrosiab Museum, Shakhi Zinda necropolis and Siyab bazaar. Then you will visit Koni Ghil Silk Paper Centre, to see the process of silk paper production and bread baking. You will enjoy freshly baked bread with tea and some traditional sweets. Later you take an early evening train to Tashkent (2 hours).

Set in a stately building facing the Esentai River, the Hotel Plaza is 20 minutes on foot from the nearest metro station, and a 50-minute walk from Zenkov Cathedral, a Ukrainian-baroque building dating from 1907. The hotel offers casual rooms with city views offer Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes and minifridges as well as tea & coffee making equipment, sitting areas, and en suite bathrooms. It has a Finnish sauna, a gym, a lobby lounge, and a 24-hour bar. A breakfast buffet served in a pleasant restaurant which offers a patio.

Holiday Budgeting

Currency in Uzbekistan
The official currency in Uzbekistan is the Uzbek sum, but this currency cannot be obtained outside the country. We recommend that you take US dollars as currency. It is worth having a reasonable supply of small denominations bills if possible, as this is accepted everywhere. Exchange facilities are available in many of the hotels we will be staying in. Major credit cards are widely accepted.
Currency in Kazakhstan
The official currency in Kazakhstan is the Tenge, which can only be obtained within Kazakhstan. Conversion of the Tenge back into hard currency may prove difficult. Foreign currency should only be exchanged at official bureaux and all transactions must be recorded on the currency declaration form that is issued on arrival. It is wise to retain all exchange receipts, although they are seldom inspected. We recommend that you take US Dollars cash and exchange when necessary.

In your holiday price, we've included tipping for our local suppliers, covering hotel and restaurant staff, local guides, and drivers. Should you wish to make an extra contribution for a specific service, this should be given directly to the recipient at your discretion.

As of 1 February 2019, British Nationals can enter Uzbekistan without a visa for a maximum stay of 30 days. If you’re travelling on a different type of British passport, are travelling for a purpose other than tourism or business, or intending to stay longer than 30 days, you should check entry requirements with the Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan in London.
For entry into Uzbekistan your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required.
Uk passport holders can stay in Kazakhstan without a visa for up to 30 calendar days. A number of visits is unlimited, but a total period of stay without a visa should not exceed 90 calendar days within a 180-day period.

Health requirements in destination can change, and it's crucial for you to take responsibility in staying informed. No compulsory immunisations are required for visits to Uzbekistan and travellers should be up to date with routine vaccination courses and boosters as recommended in the UK.
Tetanus and Hepatitis A immunisations are recommended.

There is low to no risk of Malaria in Uzbekistan.
Health Advice for Kazakhstan
No compulsory immunisations are required for visits to Kazakhstan and travellers should be up to date with routine vaccination courses and boosters as recommended in the UK.
While there is not a risk of yellow fever in Kazakhstan, if you are arriving from a yellow fever endemic country you will require a yellow fever vaccination and a certificate as proof.
Tetanus and Hepatitis A and immunisations are recommended.
You may also wish to consider immunisations against Rabies, Typhoid, Tick-Borne Encephalitis and Hepatitis B.
Diarrhoea & Boiled Water
Don’t forget to exercise caution with what you eat to avoid upset stomachs and stay away from unpeeled fruit and vegetables, salad and do not have ice in your drinks. Hot, fresh cooked food, where possible, is best.
Hand washing facilities may be poor or unavailable when travelling, we therefore strongly advise you to carry antibacterial sanitizing gel and / or hand wipes at all times and use to them regularly.
Drinking or cleaning teeth in un-boiled water is not recommended. Bottled pure water is inexpensive and widely available in shops, at hotels, and on the coach. Make sure you only buy sealed bottles.

You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.
It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.
