Uzbekistan is certainly one of the gems of Central Asia, with a deep history of the Silk Road and intriguing blend of cultures from the Middle East, the Far East and Russia. You won’t be short of vast, incredible landscapes stretched out before you when immersing yourself in curious historical sites from one destination to the next, as well as mosques, mosaics and mighty fortresses.
When you arrive in the country for your walking tour of Uzbekistan, the capital of Tashkent will be your first port of call. There, you will visit the Khast Imam complex, one of the most notable buildings in the country, whose turquoise domes and intricate artwork include some of the most precious and opulent buildings in the Islamic world. You will also get to visit the ceramic workshop of Akbar Rahimov in the capital and taste delicious local sweets, teas and cuisines throughout the trip. You can then continue your journey to Khiva, the best preserved of the Silk Road cities and travel south to Bukhara, to experience how life might have been lived by the Silk Road traders.
On our walking holidays you can also adopt the Nomad life, sleep for two nights in a Yurt Camp in the desert, where you can see the night sky in all its glory and explore Alexander the Great’s castle at Nurata. You will then move on to camp at Yangikazgan on the shores of the placid Lake Aidarkul, with mountain vistas as your backdrop. You and your like-minded team of outdoor enthusiasts can then move on to Samarkand, a wonderful place and the home of the impressive Registan Square (described by Curzon in 1899 as “the noblest public square in the world”). Finally, we return to Tashkent where we will enjoy some free time before the return flight home.
