It's no secret that we love Greece. Whether we're wandering through the ancient archaeological sites of Athens, admiring the vibrant springtime flower displays of the Mani Peninsula or hopping through the lesser-known islands of the Dodecanese. To give you more of an insight, we asked Sandra, a walk leader and guide at Ramble Worldwide who specialises in walking holidays in Greece to tell us more about her favourite destination. Sandra has led groups with Ramble Worldwide since 2017 and completed over 20 walking tours in destinations across the UK, Turkey and, of course, in Greece, where she has also lived. So who better to introduce this exceptional place - in her words, Sandra summarises her passion for Greece by saying,
"I believe that Greece is a treasure trove for walking holidays, offering stunning landscapes, rich culture, and a variety of trails that cater to all levels of walkers. With Ramble Worldwide, you can explore both the islands and mainland Greece, away from the crowds, for an authentic and immersive experience. Accommodation typically includes family-run hotels, and meals are enjoyed in local tavernas, often out of peak tourist seasons, which supports the local economy and provides an enriching experience of Greek hospitality."
I have travelled widely throughout mainland Greece and the islands. In the 1980s, I taught music in Hania, Crete, for 10 years and married into a Greek family.
People often ask me where my favourite place is. My answer is 'all of them' because they are all so different and fascinating: from the lush green and scenic hiking trails of Andros, the idyllic car-free island of Hydra, the volcanic rocky landscapes of Milos and Santorini, the pretty mountain villages of Naxos and Tinos, the gorges of Crete, the spring flowers of the Peloponnese, the evergreen forests of Halkidiki, the tranquil Ionian beaches, to history steeped Rhodes and the countless archaeological sites all over Greece.
There is always something new to discover, so I will continue my Greek Odyssey for as long as I can. There are approximately 6,000 Greek islands altogether and only 227 are inhabited.
I seek out the quieter corners of Greece, where fewer tourists venture, away from the package holiday resorts and airports. Though this means travelling by ferry or road for a few hours, reaching unspoilt and authentic parts of Greece is worth it. In such places, you will feel that you have stepped back in time, experienced the local Greek community and traditions, and been welcomed with genuine Greek hospitality and warmth.
What I love about Greece is the relaxed pace of life, the warm hospitality, the rich history and culture, endless blue skies and sun, tranquil, inviting azure seas, stunning mountainous landscapes, and mouth-wateringly delicious home-cooked cuisine. Greece is where you can effortlessly live in the moment, fully alive as your senses are awakened.
Here are a few of my personal recommendations for the best walking destinations in Greece:
1. Tinos and Andros (North Cyclades) – These islands boast spectacular walking trails maintained by the ‘Andros Routes’ charity, supported by Ramble Worldwide Outdoor Trust. Tinos is just a 3.5-hour ferry ride from Rafina Port.
2. Evia Island – Greece’s second-largest island is largely untouched by tourism, offering vast, unspoilt green landscapes. Evia is popular among Greeks and seasonal hikers, and South Evia can be reached by road and ferry in about 4 hours from Athens airport.
3. Southern Peloponnese – Wild, unspoilt, and steeped in history, this region offers a fascinating blend of nature and culture, and is approximately a 4-hour drive from Athens airport.
Discover ancient stoned pathways, untouched countryside, and serene beaches on Tinos and Andros, two Greek islands that together create a walker's’ paradise in the Cyclades. These unspoiled gems offer a tranquil escape for anyone seeking a timeless Greek island experience.
Evia, a hidden gem, provides a picturesque getaway for travellers seeking stunning scenery, traditional villages, medieval castles, and Byzantine churches. Indulge in exquisite cuisine, premium wines, and genuine Greek hospitality, making your visit to this remarkable island truly unforgettable.
In this realm of myth and magic, where divine beings held sway and legendary figures engaged in epic conflicts, the allure of Classical Greece captivates the mind in a way that is truly unparalleled. Its rich tapestry of stories and historical significance continues to inspire awe and wonder.
A personal highlight of mine is visiting the Sacred Island of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which can be reached on a day boat trip from Tinos. Delos is the mythological birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, once a pilgrimage site and trading hub. Today, it is an archaeological marvel. Climbing the Acropolis on Delos offers sweeping views and a profound sense of connection to the ancient world.
No matter where you are in Greece, there is always an abundance of local treasures to explore. Ancient archaeological sites are scattered across the country, offering glimpses into Greece's storied past. From the vibrant culture to the extensive local cuisine, there’s always something new to experience. Embrace these opportunities to connect with the land, the people, and their traditions.
When planning a walking holiday in Greece, it’s important to stay safe. Here are a few key tips:
Avoid walking in extreme heat: The best times for walking are during Spring, Autumn, and Winter when the temperatures are cooler.
Prepare for rugged terrain: Greek hiking trails can be rocky and uneven, especially the ancient mule paths known as ‘kalderimia,’ which linked mountain villages to the sea. The islands are often mountainous, so expect some ascents and descents on grade 4-6 walks.
Wear proper footwear: Shoes or boots with sturdy, non-slip soles are essential. Walking poles with rubber ferrules are also useful for navigating rocky trails.
With these tips in mind, your Greek walking holiday will be an unforgettable adventure, full of beauty, history, and discovery.
