Cruise & Walk around the Canaries – 8th – 21st December 2011
The highlight of this cruise and walk holiday (apart from the excellent company and superb food on our Ship Balmoral) was the walk on Mount Teide on Tenerife. Whilst in the Canaries we were blessed with beautiful warm sunny days without a cloud in the sky (at least where we happened to be). From the harbour at Santa Cruz we were taken by minibus through the pine forests on the lower slopes of Mount Teide. En route the driver stopped at a viewpoint where we gazed in awe at the sight of the summit hovering above a carpet of clouds.
The walk started from the Visitor Centre at El Portillo and took us across a plain at the foot of the summit of the volcano to an outcrop of red volcanic rock, La Fortaleza. We stopped briefly at a viewpoint where we marvelled at the beauty of the clouds below us. The walk then took us up to La Fortaleza and back to the Visitor Centre. The combination of the scenery and the wonderful weather made this a walk I will not forget.
We did not leave Mount Teide completely behind as we caught glimpses of it on the next two walks on both La Gomera and Gran Canaria.
