Board your ship at the Liverpool port and set sail in the early evening. Check in for your cruise begins one hour prior to embarkation and embarkation at the cruise terminal usually begins three hours before departure and closes one hour prior to sailing. At port you will be greeted by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ staff, including porters who will arrange for your luggage to be delivered to your cabin.  There will be a letter from your Ramble Worldwide leader in your cabin informing you of the place and time for you to meet the rest of the group that evening.

Arriving at Stornoway travel by coach to Breascleit. You then begin the Great Circular Walk which offers spectacular views over Loch Roag and the islands to the west. The route takes you through the beautiful valley to the deserted village of Bostadh. The path then follows the rocky shoreline over the moorland and along the banks of the Loch na Muilne until you finally reach Breascleit. From here travel by coach back to the waiting ship.

For our day here we will have local guides and all their accompanying knowledge.

From Ullapool, you travel out by coach to climb up Stac Pollaidh on foot for a rewarding adventure. The steep ascent offers breathtaking views of Loch Lurgainn and the surrounding rugged landscapes. Reaching the summit, you're greeted with panoramic vistas that stretch over the Inverpolly wilderness, making the effort well worth it.

Kirkwall, Orkney Islands

130 miles north of Aberdeen in the Orkney Islands sits Kirkwall, rich in folklore. Take a coach across the island of Mainland to the Kitchener Memorial dedicated to Lord Kitchener and the crew of the HMS Hampshire which tragically sank nearby. Walk across moorland and along cliffs to Scara Brae prehistoric village. On arrival there should be time to explore the village before returning to the ship.

Occasional changes to the ship’s schedule mean we cannot guarantee there will be time to visit Scara Brae, so we do not include the entrance ticket (around £9) in the price of the cruise.

Day 6

Torshavn, Faroe Islands

Torshavn, the capital and largest town of the Faroe Islands is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. Torshavn means ‘Thor's Harbor’, named after the god of thunder and lightning in Norse mythology. Founded in the 10th century, it is considered to be one of the oldest capitals in Northern Europe. The city of Torshavn has fish-processing plants, a shipyard, and produces woollen products. 

There are two walks available, depending on the embarkation and disembarkation times, and the duration you are in port for, there are two different walks available. The longer walk will see a transfer vehicle take you to Kirkjubour in the south coast, and a trail leads you along the coast and across cairns, opening up to a panoramic view across the hills towards Torshavn (6 miles, 2-3 hours). The shorter walk will take you from the port, along a path near the coast around the edge of the town. The trail will bring you back through Torshavn (3 miles, 1.5-2 hours). There may be some free time for you to explore indepndantly afterwards.

Klaksvik, Faroe Islands

In Klaksvík, Faroe Islands, a walk takes you from the charming town to the stunning countryside, leading up to steep, jagged hills that overlook the area. Though the path can be challenging, the reward is worth it—breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding islands and the deep, blue sea await you.

Today we come ashore in Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, the most northerly outpost of the British Isles. After meeting your local guide we have a forty-five minute drive to St Ninian’s Isle on the South Mainland of Shetland. The island is joined to the ‘mainland’ by a sand causeway ‘tombolo’ and is famous for the St Ninian’s Isle Treasure, a hoard of silver discovered under the floor of an early church in 1958.  The island boasts marvellous coastal scenery and lots of birds. Your guide takes us around the St Ninian’s Isle telling lots of old stories about shipwrecks and smugglers.

After the walk there should be time to explore Lerwick.

On arrival in Belfast keep an eye out for the colourful murals that each tell a story about Northern Irelands complicated political past as you travel to the north Antrim Coast for a walk along the cliff path to the amazing basalt rocks of the Giant’s Causeway. Some say in legend that the giant's causeway was built by the Irish Giant Fionn as part of a causeway to fight the Scottish Giant Benandonner whereas others say it is caused by volcanic fissure eruptions. Which will you think is true?

Our flagship Bolette is everything that Fred.Olsen regular guests have come to expect from their ships. Proudly bearing the name of Fred. Olsen Jr.’s great-great-grandmother, as many other Olsen vessels have over the years, she exudes classic, elegant style in her exterior and interior design, features spacious and comfortable public areas, and has all the facilities and special touches you need for a relaxing and enjoyable holiday.

While she’s one of the largest ships, by overall size, in our fleet, Bolette has capacity for less than 1,400 guests. So, in keeping with our smaller-ship ethos, you’ll find that you’re not overcrowded on board, and have plenty of space in which to indulge yourself in the stylish dining venues, enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple and fantastic entertainment at the several bars, lounges and theatres, and while away the hours by the all-season pool. On Board

As a family-owned business, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines really pay attention to the smallest detail ensuring a wonderful voyage every time.

Passengers are referred to as guests, the ships call at smaller ports so they can often get closer and avoid overcrowding both onboard and ashore. At capacity, their ships will only ever sail with between 900 and 1,400 guests, depending on the vessel.

The ships becomes your floating hotels, with breakfasts, lunches and dinners catered for. Each ship is different with their own decorative flair, but with the same Fred Olsen level of service throughout.

Onboard you will not find the climbing walls, waterslides and games arcades found on some of the bigger vessels. Instead Fred Olsen focuses on more traditional entertainment in the form of evening shows, deck quoits, quiet bars, delightful restaurants, a library and in some cases, a cards room. You will also find a gym/fitness centre, swimming pool(s), and hairdresser. The ships offer plenty of space to just sit, relax, read a book and watch the coastlines and open waters drift by.

Walks & Excursions

The described walks assume that the weather will be good and that the ship will keep to the planned schedule. We may have to change the walks if the ship’s schedule changes or there is poor weather.

Sometimes the ship may need to anchor at a port of call. This means a tender needs to be used to reach port. Your Captain will advise when a tender service will be required.

Fred Olsen asks that you take your passport with you when you leave the ship to explore on shore.

Local Transport Costs

In the holiday cost, we have included all local transport expenses related to the advertised activity programme for your convenience. If there are additional visits or excursions to enrich your experience, you can choose to participate and cover the costs locally. Depending on the itinerary, local transport may involve a mix of private hire coaches, taxis, local buses, and ferries.

Optional Excursions

At your destination, you may have the option to book various local excursions and activities through a local operator. It's important to note that we are not involved in these activities or excursions, and we do not operate, supervise, or control them in any way. Your contract will be directly with the local activity supplier, and we bear no responsibility for their actions or omissions.

Spending Money

Fred Olsen Paying On Board

The currency on board ship is sterling. A credit account system is operated onboard allowing bar drinks, wine in restaurants, laundry charges, purchases from the shop and any other incidental expenses to be automatically charged to your account. You will be required to register a debit or credit card at check-in against which to charge your onboard account. At the time of writing there is no charge for payment by credit or debit card. Onboard accounts can be settled in cash, however, a debit or credit card must still be registered at check-in to secure the on-board account balance.

The following credit cards are accepted: Diners Club, MasterCard and Visa. Fred. Olsen also accepts Visa debit cards but is unable to accept American Express, Solo, and Electron, travel agent debit cards or traveller’s cheque cards.

The ship operates a Bureau de Change onboard, where currency can be purchased or sold subject to local currency restrictions. All major currencies are stocked based on the cruise destinations with no commission charge and competitive rates.

Entrance Fees

Throughout our cruise we have some entrances to sites. Scara Brae is not included as due to the ship timings we may not have time to enter, if we do it is around £9.

Entry to the Giants Causeway during our stop off in Belfast. The entrance fee is not included in the holiday cost, approximately £13 as it is also a National Trust site and many customers are already members. Should you already have a membership card, do remember to bring it on the cruise with you.

Currency in Ireland

In Ireland, there are two currencies you'll need depending on where you travel. 

  1. The euro is used in the Republic of Ireland. 
  2. In Northern Ireland, pound sterling is the official currency. 

Travellers' cheques are no longer widely accepted on the island of Ireland.

Tipping

Your cruise holiday price includes all ship, driver and where applicable, local guide tips. You can, should you wish, tip more at your discretion for any service provider who has gone above and beyond to make your holiday special.

While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.

Leader's Evening Briefing

Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.

You have the choice to depart with your luggage on the morning of disembarkation or leave your luggage outside your cabin door on the final night of your cruise holiday. If you decide to do this, then we recommend bringing an overnight bag for toiletries, pyjamas, and a spare change of clothes.

Luggage Allowance & Travel Documents

Your luggage allowance is 200lbs or 90kg. For safety reasons, each piece of luggage should weigh less than 44lbs or 20kg.

Approximately 10 days prior to departure, we will send you your cruise tickets and luggage labels.

The morning spread also includes unlimited tea or coffee, setting the tone for a delightful day at sea.

Lunches, enjoyed on cruising days, offer flexibility. Whether you prefer the generous buffet in the restaurant, the casual offerings in the café, or an alfresco poolside experience, the choice is yours. On days of exploration, a thoughtfully provided packed lunch awaits.

Come evening, prepare for a sumptuous five-course á la carte menu in a stylish restaurant. The menu, crafted by award-winning chefs, boasts a variety of mouth-watering options, with accommodation for special diets like fat-free, vegetarian, and gluten-free meals. Served by courteous waiting staff, the dinner experience creates a wonderful atmosphere. Our reservation for dinner at 6.15 pm ensures you have ample time to enjoy the evening entertainment if desired. Footwear & Kit List

Footwear

Lightweight waterproof walking boots with a good, moulded sole (such as Vibram or similar) and a deep tread and which provide ankle support are strongly recommended and may be essential for some walks.

Outdoor activities are always safer and more enjoyable if you are prepared.

If you have not travelled with us before the following list might be of use:

Cruising Attire

Daywear

Daytime wear is casual with comfortable shoes for walking around deck. A lightweight jacket or coat is recommended for the early evening when the sun sets. You may also like to take a towel and swimwear as the Fred Olsen ships have small swimming pools and Jacuzzis. Towels are provided at the poolside should you forget your own. During the day casual wear is allowed in the restaurant but not swimwear.

Evening attire

During your cruise, there will be formal and smart casual evenings. Electricity on Board

All of the cruise ships feature 2-pin (round pin) Continental style plug (220 volt-60 Hz) and Bolette will also feature UK plug sockets.

Bolette, Borealis and Balmoral also feature the American-style 110 volt plug.

We recommend you bring adaptors on board, but if you forget, these can be borrowed from the Guest Services desk when on board, or purchased from the ship's Port Shop.

No compulsory immunisations are required for holidays in the UK although you should be up to date with the usual immunisations recommended for life in Britain. Tetanus immunisation is recommended.

It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.

The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.

Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.

In the event that you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.

If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you being unable to demonstrate that you are insured.

EHIC & GHIC Cards

Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.

It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
