You travel from Aberdeen port to Stonehaven by coach, and it's best to sit on the left side for the most stunning coastal views. Keep an eye out for the occasional deer in the fields close to the road. Once you arrive in Stonehaven, walk down to the seafront and take a stroll along the boardwalk; be sure to explore the picturesque harbour.
For your walk, head south, gradually climbing out of the town to reach the War Memorial. It's a fitting monument, and from this vantage point, you'll have panoramic sea views with plenty of benches where you can pause to take it all in. From here, continue on to the impressive Dunnottar Castle. On return back to Aberdeen take time to wander the town at your leisure.

Today we come ashore in Lerwick in the Shetland Islands, the most northerly outpost of the British Isles. After meeting our local guide we have a forty-five minute drive to St Ninian’s Isle on the South Mainland of Shetland. The island is joined to the ‘mainland’ by a sand causeway ‘tombolo’ and is famous for the St Ninian’s Isle Treasure, a hoard of silver discovered under the floor of an early church in 1958. The island boasts marvellous coastal scenery and lots of birds. Our guide takes us around the St Ninian’s Isle telling lots of old stories about shipwrecks and smugglers.
After the walk there should be time to explore Lerwick.

130 miles north of Aberdeen in the Orkney Islands sits Kirkwall, rich in folklore. From the ship we take a coach across the island of Mainland to the Kitchener Memorial dedicated to Lord Kitchener and the crew of the HMS Hampshire which tragically sank nearby. We walk across moorland and along cliffs to Scara Brae prehistoric village, on arrival there should be time for a visit before returning to the ship.
Occasional changes to the ship’s schedule mean we cannot guarantee there will be time to visit Scara Brae, so we do not include the entrance ticket (around £9) in the price of the cruise

Although Killybegs is known for having the biggest carpet loom in the world we will leave that behind and take the Pilgrim’s Path on Slieve League.
This is quite a tough walk for grade 4, but we have plenty of time, for the most part the path is broad and well made, and we return the same way.
The cliffs of Slieve League at 609m are amongst the highest sea cliffs in Europe. We normally stop at the plateau about 1km from from the summit, from where on a clear day you can see all the way to Sligo and the mountains on the Mayo coast.

Accommodation
Below is the accommodation featured on this holiday across all departure dates. Please refer to the Itinerary for more detail about each night's accommodation for each departure date.
Bearing a name that was previously bestowed on an Olsen-owned vessel in the 1940s, and inspires thoughts of the Aurora Borealis, elegant Borealis proudly connects with, and represents, the Fred Olsen's Norwegian heritage. Stylish, spacious and comfortable, with capacity for fewer than 1,400 guests, she’s in keeping with their commitment to offering a more traditional style of cruising.
But while Borealis’ capacity is smaller than many cruise vessels, she’s still one of the largest ships, by size, in the Fred Olsen fleet. On board Borealis you’ll find you’re never overcrowded. There is always ample room in which to indulge yourself in the stylish dining venues, enjoy a glass of your favourite tipple and fantastic entertainment at the bars, lounges and theatres, and while away the hours by the all-season pool. And of course, with friendly staff providing our typical level of personal, attentive service, there’s an intimate feel to the on board experience too.
On board facilities include a swimming pool, a fitness centre including a sauna, steam room and beauty salon, sun decks, several lounges and bars, and several restaurants. A deck plan of the ship can be found here
As a family-owned business, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines really pay attention to the smallest detail ensuring a wonderful voyage every time.
Passengers are referred to as guests, the ships call at smaller ports so they can often get closer and avoid overcrowding both onboard and ashore. At capacity, their ships will only ever sail with between 900 and 1,400 guests, depending on the vessel.
The ships becomes your floating hotels, with breakfasts, lunches and dinners catered for. Each ship is different with their own decorative flair, but with the same Fred Olsen level of service throughout.
Onboard you will not find the climbing walls, waterslides and games arcades found on some of the bigger vessels. Instead Fred Olsen focuses on more traditional entertainment in the form of evening shows, deck quoits, quiet bars, delightful restaurants, a library and in some cases, a cards room. You will also find a gym/fitness centre, swimming pool(s), and hairdresser. The ships offer plenty of space to just sit, relax, read a book and watch the coastlines and open waters drift by.

The described walks assume that the weather will be good and that the ship will keep to the planned schedule. We may have to change the walks if the ship’s schedule changes or there is poor weather.
Sometimes the ship may need to anchor at a port of call. This means a tender needs to be used to reach port. Your Captain will advise when a tender service will be required.
Fred Olsen asks that you take your passport with you when you leave the ship to explore on shore.

Water To Go
Opting for filtered water from a reusable bottle with its built-in water filter, like the Water-to-go bottle available at www.watertogo.eu, is a sustainable alternative to single-use sealed water bottles. Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.
As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWH17 during your order.

EHIC & GHIC Cards
Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.
It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.

Your safety and comfort are paramount to us at all times. Rest assured, when navigating certain 'hot spots' globally, Fred Olsen implement additional and robust security measures. While they cannot disclose specific details of these plans, they want us to inform you in advance that extra safety drills will be conducted before entering these waters. In areas deemed to have a higher threat level, it may be necessary to close the portholes of lower deck cabins. Fred Olsen appreciate your cooperation and understanding in advance. Your well-being is ours and their top priority, and these precautions are taken to ensure a secure and enjoyable journey for you and their crew.
Fred Olsen Plastic Policy
You'll be glad to know that on Fred Olsen ships, the use of single-use plastics has been discontinued whenever feasible. This includes the prohibition of plastic straws, cocktail sticks, stirrers, cutlery, and take-away coffee cups. The officers and crew consistently explore ways to further minimize plastic usage. All waste is meticulously collected, sorted, and discharged by the ship's staff in adherence to stringent environmental regulations. This waste is then responsibly processed onshore by approved recycling and receiving operators. It's important to note that the only waste discharged at sea consists of commuted food waste and wastewater. Your cruise experience is designed with a commitment to environmental responsibility.
Responsible Travel
We are dedicated to promoting responsible travel practices that prioritise the well-being of both the environment and local communities. We believe in the transformative power of travel and aim to minimize our ecological footprint by selecting eco-friendly accommodations, encouraging waste reduction, and supporting sustainable transportation options where possible. Our walking tours are designed to immerse participants in the local culture, fostering meaningful connections with the communities we visit. We strive to leave a positive impact by engaging in responsible tourism activities, respecting local customs, and contributing to the preservation of natural landscapes. We grant funds to many organisations and have recently partnered with Mind Over Mountains, Adaptive Grand Slam, and other groups to create an enduring impact on people’s lives and to support them to enjoy the outdoors. In addition, the Trust makes many small grants to local organisations such as Ramblers Groups, Walkers are Welcome, My kind of Books and recently provided a small grant, via his scouting group, to enable a young man whose family had fallen on hard times to complete his DofE Gold award.
Patron of the Trust is the renowned explorer, Mark Wood. Over 20 years Mark has undertaken expeditions to some of the most remote parts of our planet. Our shared values make for an exciting partnership, and we believe that by standing shoulder to shoulder we can encourage people from all communities to enjoy being active outdoors in whatever way suits them best.

Heart and Sole
We appreciate that we are in a fortunate position to be able to use our profits to help make a difference to people's lives. Heart & Sole is a venture managed by our office staff, whose aim is to reach the heart of the communities in the countries we visit. Through Heart & Sole, we hope to make more of a long term, direct impact to these communities, particularly in less developed countries where even a small amount goes a long way. See our website for more information and details of some of the projects we support.
