Classic Collection

Thoughtfully designed, meticulously planned, carefully graded, and expertly guided walking tours and hiking holidays along well-loved and off-the-beaten-track footpaths.

Overview

Holiday Highlights

  • Summit five peaks from the legendary Welsh 3,000s challenge.
  • Hike the high ridges and peaks of the Carneddau range for spectacular views.
  • Hike the North Glyder Ridge to look south to Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon).
  • Take on the scramble up the dark black crack known as the Devil’s Kitchen to claim the North Glyder Ridge.

The best Snowdonia National Park walks scale the famed Welsh 3,000s, the fifteen peaks in Wales higher than 3,000ft. The classic challenge is to complete these all in 24hrs. Over an exciting, adrenaline-fuelled weekend we’ll introduce you to one third of these peaks and summit some of the most spectacular mountains ion the list.

Make your way to Betws-y-Coed. At the one-time Victorian coaching inn that’s home for the weekend, you’ll meet your group of like-minded adventurers and be talked through the challenge ahead. You’ll note, we deliberately don’t ascend Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) on this hiking break; although it’s the highest summit in the UK outside of the Scottish Highlands, and a classic climb, over the summer it’s as much of a tourist destination as a peak to be bagged, so we’ve chosen two less-travelled trails favoured by serious walkers that still offer solitude in spades.

Begin with a classic hike, led by two qualified Mountain Leaders. Striding out on a section of the Cambrian Way you’ll explore the wide expanse of the Carneddau South Ridge. There are exposed sections and some light scrambling over the day’s hard walking as you climb, peak by peak to Carnedd Llewellyn (3,491ft), Wales' second highest peak, but the rewards are immense – if it’s clear you can see across the Menai Straits to Anglesey.

Crossing over to the Glyders North Ridge, we’ll take you on a second, less-commonly hiked trail, walking through Cwm Idwal and the Idwal Slabs. Ascending the Devil’s Kitchen you’ll see the last operating commercial slate quarry at Bethseda as you climb to Y Garn (3,107ft) and Elidir Fawr (3,031ft), with views from the high points that look out over Yr Wyddfa and the surrounding peaks of Snowdonia National Park.

  • Distance

    7.7 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    930m

This is a classic walk. From Ogwen Cottage at the Western end of Llyn Ogwen we climb steeply and head up to a really good ridge walk on a section of the Cambrian Way, most of which is above 900m. You need to be prepared for some scrambling in sections. Most notably, after the descent from Carnedd Llewelyn and a steep descent of the ridge which is loose in sections, we walk along the Eastern shore of Ffynnon Llugwy Reservoir, returning to the A5 about 2km East of Llyn Ogwen to meet our transport. It is a hard day’s walking, but the rewards are worth the effort.

Peaks: Pen Yr Ole Wen (978m/3208ft), Carnedd Dafydd (1044m/3425ft) & Carnedd Llewelyn (1064m/3490ft)

Accommodation

  • Time

    5.5 hours

  • Distance

    8 miles

  • Ascent/Descent

    960/1160m

This route is not commonly walked, however it is a very pleasant ridge walk, seeing Llyn Idwal and ascending the Devil's Kitchen, heading north to Penrhyn Quarry, the last operating commercial slate quarry at Bethesda. As we continue west to Elidir Fawr we'll also see the top reservoir feeding the Llanberis pump storage power station. Finally, we walk around the edge of the vast old Llanberis mine working where we can see the lower reservoir and the entrance tunnel to the power station, which is built in an old slate cavern inside the mountain.

Peaks: Y Garn (947m/3106ft) & Elidir Fawr (923m/3031ft)
