The Wainwright Memorial Walk

Gerard Carson | Tue 19 Jan 2016

This is a wonderful set of walks in the Lake District that covers a good selection of the upper fells that were made famous by the late Alfred Wainwright.

Although we had pretty mixed weather during the week that was spent at Ramblers’ comfortable property, Hassness that sits just by the shore of Buttermere, each day’s route was well designed to take us through some of the best of Lakeland’s scenery, and to the tops of many of the more famous fells. And of course to the top of England’s highest point of Scafell Pike.

Our leader, Ian, set a good approach and pace in covering the range of walks that were all well graded at C or C+ level. It was of course the brighter days and when views opened up that remain the real highlights.

As well as attaching a few photos to show some representative views, it is also worth mentioning Carol, Brian and Ruby – our very warm and accommodating hosts at Hassness, and as well as the wholesome meals they provided each day. And it would also be wrong of me if I failed to mention the delicious home made cakes that were there when we returned from our daily wanders.

This is a very good trip that would suit anyone who enjoys, or would enjoy, getting up to the higher reaches of the Lakeland fells and across terrain such as Striding Edge.
