The Six Faces of Peru Trekking Holiday

Linda Masterson | Mon 04 Jan 2016

Six Faces Of Peru – August 7th – 24th

One of the highlights of the trip for me was seeing the condors rise on the thermals in Colca Canyon. The Canyon itself was incredible – deeper than the Grand Canyon – and the walk along the top of the canyon was stunning, but had to be taken slowly due to the altitude!

Other highlights were the boat rides on Lake Titicaca, both on a speedboat and a reed boat, and the visit to the island of Taquile, where the population still wear traditional dress and the men really do knit – I had to buy a hat there!

I had been to Machu Picchu before as the culmination of a charity trek in 2008, but it is still nevertheless a stunning sight, and one cannot fail to be amazed by the ingenuity of the Incas.

My final highlight was the visit to the Jungle Lodge in the Amazon where I saw tree frogs, tarantulas, myriads of colourful butterflies and a poisonous coral snake! I was delighted when I managed to catch a catfish in the Amazon River. One of our party caught a piranha but it wriggled off the hook (luckily for us!).

Overall I had an amazing trip, from the snow capped Andes, the high plains and lakes, the Inca ruins, to the flora and fauna of the Amazon Jungle – what an experience!
