The Magic of the Canaries

Introduction
Beryl Waghorn spent Christmas and New Year on one of our Cruise & Walk holidays to the Canaries, where visiting a new island each day combined with carefully graded walking made for an excellent alternative to festive over-indulgence and the British weather!
"This was my first holiday with Ramblers Worldwide Holidays, and the experience was great. Adam’s competent leadership and a friendly group enabled varied terrain to be encountered with relative ease!
Sailing on the Balmoral, Lisbon was our first port of call, where the informative walking tour of the old city gently introduced the holiday.
Madeira was a contrast as we undertook a criss-cross walk beside the levadas flowing round the mountainside. The walk terminated in a steep and winding decent on cobblestones that some found difficult.
For the post-Christmas walk in El Teide National Park, Tenerife, a leadership priority was to encourage suitable pacing for the uphill mountain walk to the designated ridge for clear views of Mount Teide.
Gran Canaria required extra concentration as icy conditions between Cnuz de Tejede and the picturesque centre of Teror had to be encountered. One path was beginning to give way, but everyone passed it safely with the help of the leader and group support.
Lanzarote provided a walk through volcanic landscapes to reach the white, sandy beaches of the Timanfaya National Park. Sunshine, resting places and refreshment were enjoyed as Adam enthused over the rich history of the area.
The final walk began on New Year’s Eve after a cable car ride to a high point on the Rock of Gibraltar. A zig-zag walk was taken down to the bay and city with spectacular views. Many Barbary apes were seen actively involved in their daily living. The question was raised as to whether they would be easier to round up to make the descent than our particular group??
All returned to the Balmoral safely. A highly recommended holiday."
