New Zealand – it really is the holiday of a lifetime!

Tour leaders Jane and Al Sarjeant have led eight tours to New Zealand and have never tired of its sights and experiences. Here’s why they love this extra-special walking destination.

When we are asked why is New Zealand so special, we are never lost for words. Whether it’s the ‘Grand Tour’ of both the North and South Islands, or the  Great South Island Adventure, these holidays uncover all those unique places and people, traditions and sights you won’t see anywhere else. We are always so excited to show off our favourite country.

The tour starts in Auckland, a city of green parks & spectacular coastline. Heading south to Rotorua, we discover more about the geysers and Maori customs. The next highlight is the fabulous walking in the Tongariro National Park, its magnificent volcanoes towering into the clouds.

A spectacular ferry journey from Wellington across the Cook Straits to arrive on the South Island & the sights just keep getting better. We visit one of the famous Marlborough wineries before arriving in the Nelson Lakes National Park to walk the lakes & mountain trails. Continuing south to visit Franz Josef Glacier, we see the first views of Mount Cook high in the Southern Alps.

From here we drive inland to the iconic Queenstown, a favourite with everyone. Set beside a glacial lake, with mountains surrounding it, the setting is breathtaking. The walks here are stunning.

Moving on again, Te Anau is our base for another highlight of the trip – Milford Sound, breathtaking in any weather. The drive to the Sound is considered one of the best in the world. The fiord's cliffs rise vertically from the dark waters, mountain peaks scrape the sky and waterfalls cascade downwards. We depart on a cruise to take in the atmosphere of this magical place.

As our trip comes to an end, we have another chance to see Mount Cook. This time we walk in the Mount Cook National Park, and really get up close to the big mountains surrounding the trails we walk.
