Alaskan Wilderness Walking and Wildlife

We do mean wilderness. You’ll fly to Anchorage, and then venture into some of the last untamed places on earth. You’re likely to see bears – in fact there are more of them here than there are humans. And you might meet other local inhabitants like whales, porpoises, and many species of birds. The views have to be seen to be believed, and in Wrangell-St Elias National Park you’ll see them from an even better vantage point: a small plane. 

It requires some pioneering spirit – the roads, accommodation and food are all more basic then you’d find elsewhere – but you’ll be rewarded with some truly unforgettable experiences.

America's Canyonlands and Desert Southwest

This trip takes in six National Parks in the southwestern US, plus the Navajo tribal lands. You’ll see an amazing variety of geographical features, such as the rock formations in Zion National Park, and Bryce Canyon National Park’s otherworldly giant natural amphitheatres. In Colorado, you’ll hike with a Navajo guide to the Pueblo Indian ruins of Mesa Verde, and visit the sacred tribal lands in Monument Valley.

Canadian Rockies and Vancouver Island

You can chose to do this trip from Vancouver to Calgary or the other way around. Either way, you’ll walk many magnificent trails, in the company of your RWH leader and, at times, a Canadian guide or a local ranger. They’ll help you to fully appreciate the wildlife and the astounding scenery – both imposing mountains and lush valleys. The trip also includes a vineyard tour in Whistler. 

Vancouver Island is one of the best places in the world to see Orcas (killer whales), and there you’ll take a boat trip to search for them.

Choquequirao and Machu Picchu

The holiday starts with a flight to Cuzco. You’ll take a day to get used to the altitude – it’s more than 11,000 feet above sea level. Then you’ll start a two-day trek to the ruined Incan city of Choquequiro. Although less famous than Machu Picchu, it’s unique and well worth the journey.

The trek then continues through remote villages and across the Totora Pass. At over 15,000 feet, it’s a high point of the trip in more ways than one. Finally you reach Aguas Calientes, from where you’ll take a guided tour of Machu Picchu. 

You’ll go back to Cuzco the easy way – by train. 

Hill Stations of the Himalayas

Over 17 nights and with local guides, you’ll explore some of India’s greatest treasures. You’ll start in the hills of Himachal Pradesh, and follow trails through forests and gorges, past rivers and villages. You’ll take a train from Delhi to Amritsar, where you’ll visit the Golden Temple and witness first light prayers. At Wagha Border, you’ll see the fascinating and spectacular Retreat ceremony.

Next stop, Dharamshala, home of the Dalai Lama. You’ll then explore the Himalayan foothills, and trek all the way up to Rohtang Pass, 13,000 feet above sea level. Riding the narrow gauge train from Shimla to Kalka is a thrilling experience. Finally, another train carries you back to Delhi.

Sri Lankan Trails

This trip has a little bit of everything. History in the colonial streets of Columbo and then, after heading inland, the location of the classic film ‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’. Industry – of a low-tech variety – with a tour of a gem mine in Rajarata. Then gastronomy, with a tea-tasting at Horton Plains in the highlands, where you’ll also watch the leaves being processed. 

Next up is culture: at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy and, in Habarana, the spectacular rock fortress Sigiriya (the Lion Rock). Nature calls with a walk through a rural area, stopping at a farm to get an insight into rural lives, and a day exploring Wilpattu National Park, looking for leopards, elephants and sloth bears. To cap it all off, the final night is spent relaxing by the beach. Who could ask for more?
