This captivating country is full of dreamy landscapes, towering mountains and magical moorlands while being crisscrossed with fantastic trails, just waiting to be found. Whether you want to ramble the winding coastal paths, explore secluded places or experience the country’s iconic routes - the possibilities are endless.
To help you out, we’ve rounded up three of the best walks in Scotland, below.
The West Highland Way
Possibly one of the most impressive courses in the UK, the West Highland Way moves through some of the country's salient Munros and historical sites while containing awe-inspiring terrains. Stretching from Milngavie to Fort William, this 96-mile trail passes by the luscious Loch Lomond and the striking Ben Lomond, as well as the glorious Rannoch Moor (which is a truly wild place).
This multi-day itinerary is the perfect chance to test out your navigation skills, although the pathway itself is very well signposted. The northern side has far more peaks to climb compared to the south but many find it a rewarding section, which is home to an abundance of marvellous landscapes.
Orkney Islands
There are a handful of eye-catching tracks here. Enjoy gentle rambles along dramatic coastlines, an array of scintillating bird watching opportunities, stimulating hill treks and paths across the meandering moors. Additionally, you will embark on unique journeys featuring countless ancient sites and quaint towns to see.
At Wideford Hill, you will venture to a 5,000-year-old chambered cairn on the mainland. Alternatively, make your way over to Rousay to trek the moorlands. There is also an eclectic mix of birds and wildlife for you to admire as you traverse this picturesque area.
The Shetland Archipelago
This cluster of islands is situated 130-miles north of the Scottish mainland and offers incredible hikes in beautifully remote locations. There are multiple headlands to visit, as well as strolls around Clickimin Loch and the Isle of Noss to name but a few. It is here that you can spot puffins, dolphins and free-roaming Shetland ponies during your journey.
The Muckle Roe route has to have some of the most breathtaking scenery for outdoor enthusiasts, where you will ascend tall cliffs and watch the waves crashing beneath you. Connected to the Shetlands via a bridge lies this fascinating and accessible place, which is not to be missed.
