A guide to Greece: Where are the best walking routes in the country?

Ramble Worldwide | Fri 15 Jul 2022

The best walks in Greece are those which make the most of the country’s idyllic landscapes and spiritual culture. Rooted deep in Western history, the mystical charm of this European nation attracts millions of tourists every year, keen to explore the rugged beauty of the mainland and the serenity of its islands.

Strolling the Greek shores allows you to embrace its relaxed way of life, all while delighting in the glittering sunshine reflected in the azure sea. There are numerous routes to wander here, so to help you choose, we’ve picked out three of the best walks you can find in Greece

Halkidiki: Hike in Sithonia

Halkidiki, the region of northern Greece famed for being the birthplace of Aristotle, boasts unspoiled beaches, clear seas adorned with boats, olive groves and quaint stone architecture. We selected this hike as one of Greece’s leading walks as it allows you to see the best this region has to offer, including its diverse terrain and beautiful waters.

Porto Koufo, the starting place for this trek, is Greece’s second-largest natural harbour and is home to plenty of craggy cliffsides and natural wonders. Interestingly, its name translates to “hollow port" and refers to the fact that it cannot be heard inland.

You can also take a dip in the salty water before continuing to meander over the gradual ascents and descents. To experience the delights of this trek, book our Unspoilt Greece trip.

Tinos: The marble villages of Ysterna and Pyrgos

Tinos, an island that makes up part of the Cyclades archipelago, attracts yearly pilgrimages thanks to the treasured Greek church of Panagia Evangelistria. With picturesque windmills, small settlements and Venetian fortifications, this is an incredibly special place.

Walking in the marble villages of Ysterna and Pyrgos offers visitors an attractive glimpse into the architectural history and culture of Greece. The dazzling sunlight bounces off the sublime white structures that have become so iconic in Grecian imagery.

Then, to round off the day of walking, visit the coast at Panormos to indulge in a bit of R&R at a local taverna. To make the most of this visit with an expert leader and a group of like-minded people, take this walk with us on one of our holidays to Tinos and Andros.

Mount Pelion peninsula

The Greek mainland is an oft-overlooked trove of treasures. The Pelion peninsula’s routes comprise cobblestone streets that lead you from village to village. With mule paths and tavernas dotted along this scenic area, the possibilities for walking are limitless.

The value of the church is obvious here, as small chapels of worship adorn the coastline. These aesthetic buildings provide visitors with an archetypal Greece that is picture-perfect.

A number of excellent treks await you on the Pelion peninsula. Not only will you get to visit this secluded coast, but you’ll also hop over to the island made famous by Mamma Mia!
