The Peneda-Gerês National Park is high country of outstanding natural beauty.
What does this mean?
Overview
If you are looking at this one week holiday why not make your stay two weeks by joining us on Portugal's Northern Highlights.
The Peneda-Geres National Park is the only national park in Portugal and home to outstanding natural beauty where the air is clear and the waters pure. Revel in the diverse and stunning landscapes that define this sanctuary, from lush woodland rivers and hidden waterfalls to craggy peaks and ancient stone villages. This sanctuary is a haven for rare wildflowers, birds of prey, wild horses, and an array of wildlife.
The two-center holiday unfolds in the heart of the Serra da Peneda, strategically designed to showcase the most spectacular facets of these mountains. The diverse walks will lead us around the dramatic crags and granite terrain of Meadinha and guide us through ancient trails along the lush river Peneda valley.
The first centre is in the mountain village of Castro Laboreiro dominated by its ancient castle. As you venture west from the hotel, towering granite crags and hidden wooded valleys await. To the east, isolated traditional villages with high mountain meadows and rolling moorland extend to the Spanish frontier.
Walk across the mountains to your second centre in the remote sanctuary of Nossa Senhora da Peneda. The hotel, once the pilgrims’ hostel, has been imaginatively converted into a hotel. Set with a backdrop of trees, crags and waterfalls, the grand stairway of the sanctuary descends into the valley below. Peneda's somewhat remote location has preserved the park landscape, allowing you not only to appreciate the region's beauty but also to explore the ancient hamlets scattered throughout the countryside.
