When British winters are chilly, damp and enveloped with a pervasive greyness in the alpine areas across Europe the countryside often looks at its best. The air may be cold but its dry; the sky takes on a deeper hue of azure against the snow-capped peaks. We will spend our week walking or snowshoeing under these (hopefully) azure skies
What does this mean?
Overview
Between the high peaks of the Dolomites and the plains of the Po valley, Trentino offers an ideal place to enjoy the finest mountain scenery. We will walk amongst pre-alp and pre-dolomite area of manageable mountains, open meadows and forests of beech, pine and fir. If conditions warrant, we will use snowshoes, if not we just walk. If we are lucky, we might see Venice, a distant speck on the horizon, the soaring rock towers of the Brenta Dolomites, the glaciated Adamello and perhaps the Venetian Dolomites.
Our walking programme will be a mixture of walking on well-trodden snow covered paths. Walking boots (possibly with ice grippers, which are not included and should be obtained and tried out before arriving in Trentino) will be fine. At higher altitudes we anticipate using snowshoes. All of this will depend on unpredictable snow conditions. Our local guide will advise and tutor us in the use of whatever equipment is necessary.
We stay just outside Folgaria, the main town in the area. Its main street is a pleasant place to stroll of an evening with plenty of life, shops and bars. We are about 15 mins walk from the centre. The walk is on roads and easily followed. Folgaria is also the local transport hub allowing us to use public transport to reach our walks on occasions. We will also hire private transport as appropriate.
As with all winter activities snow cannot be guaranteed. However, the walks are equally spectacular on snowshoes or walking boots. It is important to note that like all winter activities there is an element of weather dependence. Please take this itinerary as a guide to what walks we might do. The day to day itinerary will be chosen to make the best of the conditions.

Austria really knows how to do winter - trees heavy with snow, picturesque alpine villages, log fires and glühwein create a magical atmosphere.
Situated high on a mountain plateau in the Bernese Oberland, Kandersteg is very much a traditional Swiss village offering classic winter walking paths.
