This is a grade 4 snowshoeing holiday where you’ll strap on a pair of snowshoes and walk off-piste into a beautiful wilderness out of bounds to skiers. You can expect full and half days of walking. The full days can be up to 5 hours of walking whereas the half a day can be 3 hours. On some days we may offer a morning and an afternoon walk if possible. Some of the walks are at the top end of the holiday grade because it takes more energy to cover snowy mountain terrain on snowshoes than when summer walking, but it’s worth it!
The highest point normally reached on this holiday is 2100m on the spectacular airy ridge between the Bernardseck Hut and the Muttekopf peak.
Paths are snow covered and can be icy or steeper in places, but manageable with your snowshoes. Our routes take us through meadows and woodland areas, some along the valley and some climbing through forest onto the high meadows to give marvellous views. We may also use cable cars to whisk us up or down the mountainside.
Meticulously curated, guided walking holiday itineraries that delve into the culture, wildlife, cuisine, and rich history of the world.
Overview
Experience the magic of winter with our unforgettable 7-night snowshoeing holiday in the picturesque village of Bach, nestled in the heart of the Austrian Alps. Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of fir trees heavy with snow, charming alpine villages, crackling log fires, and the warmth of glühwein. Here, in Bach, age-old customs meet undisturbed tranquillity, offering you the perfect backdrop for a rejuvenating winter adventure.
In the northern Tirol, between the Lechtal Alps to the south and the Allgäu Alps to the north, Bach lies at just over 1,000m, with the surrounding peaks rising to well over 2,500m.
Walks take us through snow-covered meadows and spruce woods to the beautifully situated Wasealm Hut with views up the Griess valley. On another day we head west to walk between the Kalbele and Körber Lakes – a walk described as “walking through hills covered in icing sugar”. The highlight of the week may well be a walk to the Bernardseck Hut.
The hotel manager, an experienced snowshoe walking leader with an intimate knowledge of the area will normally lead most of our walks. We include all local transport for our snowshoeing programme.
As with all winter activities snow cannot be guaranteed. However, the walks are equally spectacular on snowshoes or walking boots. It is important to note that like all winter activities there is an element of weather dependence. Please take this itinerary as a guide to what walks we might do. The day-to-day itinerary will be chosen to make the best of the conditions.

Some skiers spend years trying to get off piste but never quite manage it. Sometimes, the answer is so simple: just ditch the skis, strap on a pair of snowshoes, and walk.
Situated high on a mountain plateau in the Bernese Oberland, Kandersteg is very much a traditional Swiss village offering classic winter walking paths.

Today is often taken as a free day. Whilst we have chosen Bach im Lechtal for the excellent snowshoe walking on offer, other winter sports are available in the area.
Winter walking – many of the summer hiking trails are prepared for winter walking. Whilst most of these are in the valleys, some go as high as mountain huts. There are 3 mountain huts around Bach, which are open in the winter and make good winter walking destinations.
Cross country (‘XC’) skiing – there are 120km (80 miles) of prepared XC ‘Loipen’, one of which goes past the hotel. Many of the others can be accessed using the free bus in the valley between Steeg about 12km (8 miles) to the west and Forschach about 25km (16 miles) to the northeast.
Downhill skiing - there is one chairlift in Bach, which gives access to a blue and a red downhill ski run (not included in the free bus pass). The nearest extensive downhill skiing is about 25km (16 miles) to the west in Warth which has 17 ski lifts. There is a free ski-bus to Warth which takes about 25 minutes. The road to Lech am Arlberg is closed in the winter.
Please note that none of these activities will be included as a part of your holiday nor can we take any part in organising them. If you would like to take part in any of them you need to make sure you have adequate insurance and make your own arrangements locally.

European Passport Advice
If you are planning to travel to an EU country (except Ireland), or Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Monaco, San Marino or Vatican City, you must meet the Schengen area rules.
Your passport must meet 2 requirements. It must be:
For some Schengen countries your passport may need to be less than 10 years old during your whole visit, and the 3 months at the end of your visit may need to be within 10 years of your passport’s issue date.
Check both the issue date and the expiry date in your passport. If you renewed your passport early, extra months may have been added to its expiry date. This could affect the requirement for your passport to be less than 10 years old.
Non British Passport holders should consult the host country’s embassy for applicable passport and visa entry requirements.

The hotel provides a large buffet breakfast including muesli, a large selection of breads and local specialities. There are 4 courses at dinner including a large salad buffet. The menus choices always include one vegetarian option. Unfortunately currently the hotel is unable to cater for strict vegan diets. Please contact us for the latest information if this will be an issue for you. Lunches are not included but we hope to enjoy them in the wonderful mountain restaurants.

Water To Go
Opting for filtered water from a reusable bottle with its built-in water filter, like the Water-to-go bottle available at www.watertogo.eu, is a sustainable alternative to single-use sealed water bottles. Simply refill it from any water source and contribute to saving the environment from disposable plastic bottles.
Exciting news: Water-to-go has introduced two new bottles to their collection. The Active bottle is designed to fit bike water bottle holders, and the Sugarcane bottle is an even more planet-friendly option. Crafted from fibrous cane, a by-product of liquid extraction, it undergoes a process to create plant-based plastic. Explore the details on the Water-to-Go website for this innovative new range.
As a token of appreciation for your commitment to the environment, we've secured an exclusive 15% discount with Water-to-Go for you. Visit www.watertogo.eu and use the code RWH17 during your order.

You might wish to take a small bottle of antibacterial hand gel with you for times when you're unable to wash your hands.
It’s a condition of booking that you obtain adequate travel insurance, from a reputable provider, to undertake the holiday, including UK trips chiefly due to the cancellation element of cover.
The policy must cover the period from the date of booking to the last day of your trip and should include, as a minimum, cover for: medical expenses (including the consequences of a Covid positive test result), mountain rescue including helicopter rescue, death, repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and shall not have exclusion clauses limiting cover for the activities you will partake in on your trip, including altitudes reached in the holiday arrangement. It is your responsibility to check that your policy is adequate for the nature and destination of the holiday booked.
Once you have obtained your travel insurance, please provide us with the name of your travel insurer, the policy number and the insurer’s 24 hour emergency assistance number.
If you fail to obtain suitable Travel Insurance we shall not be liable for any costs incurred or claims made against us due to your failure to comply with this term.
If travelling outside the UK you must carry proof of insurance with you and produce it if reasonably requested to do so by RWH Travel staff, tour leaders or suppliers. No refunds will be made should you be excluded from the walking programme through being uninsured or you are unable to demonstrate that you are insured.
Our house broker MPI should be considered for whom we are an affiliate and contact information is on our website and will be referred to in your booking confirmation.
If you are travelling to an EU country or Switzerland, please also ensure that you have either an existing valid EU EHIC card (European Health Insurance Card) or a valid UK GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card). You can apply for a UK GHIC free of charge on the NHS website at https://services.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/cra/start.
EHIC & GHIC Cards
Starting January 1st, 2021, you, as a UK traveller, can continue using your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) throughout its valid five-year period, granting you access to medical assistance during your holiday until its expiry date. Be aware, though, that this coverage will no longer extend to Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland. In case you don't have a valid EHIC, you can apply for a new UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC), which will replace the EHIC as it gets phased out.
It's essential to emphasize that the EHIC/GHIC, while valuable, should not be regarded as a substitute for comprehensive medical or travel insurance. For your peace of mind and comprehensive coverage, considering additional insurance is highly recommended.
