Overview
Take yourself on a journey through the ever changing dramatic scenery of the Algarve, from East to West!
The eastern Algarve enjoys a quieter, more relaxed pace of life. Close to the Spanish border and surrounded by plantations of orange and lemon trees, the Eastern Algarve is home to beautiful long sandy beaches and picturesque Portuguese towns dotting the waterfront.
The western Algarve offers a glorious mix of coastal, mountain and inland landscapes. The varied geology produces a rich diversity of scenery from granite mountains to dramatic limestone escarpments and impressive red sea cliffs.
Tavira is one of the most picturesque towns and straddles the Rio Gilao as it meets the Atlantic Ocean and flows into the shallows of the offshore Ria Formosa Natural Park in the eastern Algarve. The ancient Ponta Romana spans the Rio Gilao, separating the two sides of the town. You will find a maze of winding streets and shaded squares lined with whitewashed houses, decorated with colourful Arab style tiles, flower filled balconies and painted strips of blue and yellow decorating door and window frames.
Portimao was a centre for ship building and sardine finish. Now its a scenic promenade, historical buildings, beautiful sandy beaches with its warm waters and red cliff backdrop makes Portimao an attractive destination in the western Algarve.
Lagos is a historical and characterful city, an important Roman settlement called 'Lacobriga'. A variety of Roman ruins remain, including the old slave market. The town centre, which is enclosed within 5th century walls offers a modern and beautiful marina that dominates the sea front, decorated with restaurants, cobbled streets and dramatic natural scenery.
